Amelia Attard found a passion in employment relations almost by accident, but now she couldn’t picture doing anything else. She’s been at Citation Group for two years and is part of the HR Advice Line team. Between nonstop advisory calls and finishing her degree, her schedule is jam-packed, but she still found time to sit down with me and open up about her life, her role at Citation Group, and her passion for helping our clients.
Let’s meet the passionate Amelia.
What is your role at Citation Group?
I started as a Workplace Relations Advisor and since then my career has progressed and I was promoted to Workplace Relations Consultant.
How did you get your job at Citation Group?
This is actually a funny story! I was in my second year of my degree – Bachelor of Laws and Social Science at Macquarie. I applied online and got a call (from the recruiter). I had actually applied for a personal assistant role but the recruiter said to me “You’re absolutely welcome to interview for that role but we’ve actually got this team called the HR Advice Line, and we think you’d be great for that.” So I ended up trusting her and I interviewed for this role. That’s how I landed here and the rest is history.
What’s the HR Advice Line team culture like?
I love how supportive our team is. No one’s ever left by themselves. We all pick up the slack and help each other. One of my favourite team traditions is welcome lunches. You get to sit down with everybody and whilst it’s a good introduction for new members of the team, it’s also a great opportunity to catch up with everyone else in your office and take some time away from the phones and get to know the people you work with.
What’s the first thing you do when you start work every day?
I love writing to-do lists, and I love to be organised so I’ll often log in early to get on top of my emails. I do work from home for some of the week, but if I am in the office, it’s really nice to catch up with my colleagues and grab a hot chocolate when I first come in.
What do you like most about Citation Group?
It sounds really cliche, but I’m going to say the people. I love everyone I work with. Everyone in my team is really friendly and lovely to talk to, and they’re always there to support me. But I think it goes beyond that; I often speak with my colleagues from different parts of the business and everyone is just nice – it’s just a lovely environment. It’s nice knowing that if you have a question that relates to a different area of employment relations, someone’s there to support you. You’re never on your own.
What’s an important lesson you’ve learned while working at Citation Group?
I’ve learnt a lot of things because this is my first professional role. But I think the biggest thing I’ve learnt is setting realistic expectations. Whether that’s with clients, with my colleagues, or even in my personal life.
Tell me about a time you made a difference in a client’s life and how it made you feel.
I feel really proud when I’m able to help a client who’s really nervous or worried. Potential claims are a big worry for some of our clients and they don’t know how to navigate these issues. I’m able to comfort them, be there for them and then talk through an action plan with them, and help them figure it all out. And it’s such a proud moment when you hear back from those clients, and they’re in a much better frame of mind. They say things like “Thank you so much for helping me.” and “I couldn’t have done it without you .”
What advice do you have for new Citation Group employees?
Just jump in headfirst! The team environment is so welcoming and the training is so thorough that you really could give anything a go if you wanted to, so long as you have the interest, the drive and the passion. We’ll help you get where you want to go.
What’s the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?
I would plan and go on a massive holiday. I’m actually getting married in January 2026, so I’d love to do my honeymoon in Europe.
Do you have a motto or personal mantra you like to quote or live by?
‘Everything happens for a reason’ and I guess that rings true to coming into this role as well. Applying for a different role and finding such a passion in employment relations and employment law – It was something I hadn’t considered. And now I would honestly say I couldn’t really think of working in another place or another industry. I love it! So yeah, everything happens for a reason! It’s all worked out.
