What is ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 is a standard set by the International Organization For Standardization (ISO). ISO 9001:2015 is the latest revision of the standard. This ISO standard is designed to ensure that companies provide high-quality products and services by implementing a Quality Management System (QMS) that meets international standards set out by the ISO.
The certification process is very complex and involves a wide variety of assessments, audits, reviews of internal processes and quality control tools, and other such systems related to quality management.
If a company meets the necessary set of requirements and passes, they become certified as ISO 9001-compliant. Becoming certified under ISO 9001 means that their products and services meet ISO standards, and have been vetted and checked for quality, with appropriate quality controls and quality management systems in place throughout the business.
The certification process for individual companies – like those in your supply chain – is not handled by the ISO itself, though. Instead, regional ISO “accreditation bodies” such as JAS-ANZ provide accreditation to a “certification body,” such as Citation Certification.
So, for example, JAS-ANZ has accredited Citation Certification, which means we can audit individual companies in Australia and determine whether or not they are conforming to ISO 9001 guidelines – and certify them accordingly.
Why does ISO 9001 matter for my supply chain? Explaining the importance
Ideally, your business should work exclusively with suppliers that are certified under ISO 9001. Choosing to work with certified companies provides you with a number of unique competitive advantages.
- Ensures quality – A supplier that has ISO 9001 certification will have the appropriate quality management solutions in place to ensure their product or service meets your needs and expectations. This leads to fewer production delays, lower costs of operation, and higher overall profitability.
- Builds confidence when working with new suppliers – ISO 9001 certification is not easy to get. That means that it’s one of the best ways to vet potential partners. If a partner company has ISO 9001 certification, that means you can have confidence that your supplier is taking the appropriate steps to manage the quality of their products.
- Continuous improvement in the future – ISO 9001 certification is not a “one and done.” It’s all about continuous improvement, and providing companies with the information and resources they need to manage quality more effectively. This means that ISO 9001-certified suppliers provide better products and services both now – and in the future.
- Improved customer satisfaction – When your supply chain partner manages its business to ensure the best possible quality, this benefits your customers, too. Whether you’re creating products for B2B (business to business) sales or to sell to consumers, choosing ISO 9001-certified suppliers is a fantastic way to ensure that your customers are happy with your products and/or services.
