What is ISO 14001 certification?

ISO 14001:2015 is an international standard that sets the framework for an effective environmental management system (EMS). It helps organisations manage their environmental aspects, meet compliance obligations, and drive continual improvement in environmental performance. The standard also integrates seamlessly with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 for businesses pursuing a combined management system.

With over 400,000 certificates issued globally, ISO 14001 is built around the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. This gives you a practical framework for setting environmental objectives, implementing controls, and measuring performance. More than 3,300 Australian businesses trust Citation Group to guide them through their ISO 14001 journey.

What are the benefits of ISO 14001 Certification?

The key benefits of ISO 14001 extend well beyond environmental compliance. Here’s what certification delivers for your business.

Key elements of the ISO 14001 standard

ISO 14001:2015 is structured around ten clauses. The first three cover scope, references, and terms; clauses 4 through 10 define the operational requirements of a compliant EMS.

Understanding the internal and external factors that affect your EMS, identifying interested parties and stakeholder expectations, defining scope, and mapping your significant environmental aspects and environmental impact.

Top management commitment to the EMS, establishing and communicating your environmental policy, and assigning clear roles and responsibilities.

Risk-based thinking applied to environmental risks and opportunities, legal obligations, and setting measurable environmental objectives that support better decision making and align with your business strategy.

The resources, competence, awareness, communication, and documented information needed to run an effective management system.

Planning and controlling the processes that manage your environmental aspects, including a life cycle perspective on products and services.

Monitoring and measuring environmental performance through internal audits, management review, and tracking progress against objectives.

Addressing nonconformities, taking corrective action, and embedding continual improvement into your EMS.

How do you choose an ISO 14001 certification body in Australia?

Choosing the right ISO 14001 certification body in Australia starts with one thing: JAS-ANZ accreditation. JAS-ANZ is the government-appointed body that authorises certification bodies to issue ISO certificates in Australia. Without it, your certificate won’t be recognised for government tenders, supply chain requirements, or international markets.

Beyond accreditation, five factors are worth considering:

  1. Experience: How many organisations have they certified, and across which industries?
  2. Local expertise: Do their auditors understand Australian regulatory requirements, environmental legislation, and the specific demands of your industry?
  3. Dedicated support: Will you have a single point of contact throughout the process?
  4. Transparent pricing: Are all costs clear upfront, with no hidden fees?
  5. Post-certification support: Do they help you stay compliant and audit-ready year-round?

Prepare your ISO 14001 management system

If you’re implementing an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) in your organisation and you’re preparing your organisation for an external audit, our ISO 14001 Gap Analysis Checklist will give you the list of items you need to prepare for ISO 14001 accreditation audits.

The first step in implementing an ISO EMS in your organisation is to identify the gaps by comparing your current management systems with the ISO 14001:2015 requirements and identifying key environmental impact considerations. Proper planning supports both EMS implementation and regulatory compliance.

This is the first ISO certification attained by our company, and we initially felt a little daunted at the task. However, our auditor has been on the journey with us all the way, encouraged us/answered questions as required and where needed, given us constructive feedback. We were thrilled to get certified in ISO 14001 last year, and have just done our annual assessment and were again successful.

Got burning questions? We’ve got answers.

ISO 14001 is an internationally recognised standard providing a holistic framework for company management to improve an organisation’s environmental performance. It helps businesses address environmental issues like waste generation and resource use while integrating sustainability into their operations. The standard emphasises continuous improvement through internal audits and the ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ cycle, ensuring compliance with regulations and alignment with top management goals.

The most recent version is ISO 14001:2026, which supersedes ISO 14001:2015. The new edition introduces updated requirements that organisations must address to maintain certification. If you’re currently certified to ISO 14001:2015, your Citation Group can advise on transition timelines and what the changes mean for your existing EMS.

ISO 14001:2015 requires your organisation to identify and manage the environmental aspects of your operations, from internal processes and suppliers through to the final product or service. Requirements are structured across seven clauses (4 to 10), each covering a different part of your EMS. Meeting them demonstrates ISO 14001 compliance and gives you a framework for continual improvement.

The clauses are:

  • Context of the Organisation (clause 4).
  • Leadership (clause 5).
  • Planning (clause 6).
  • Support (clause 7).
  • Operation (clause 8).
  • Performance Evaluation (clause 9).
  • Improvement (clause 10).

The Annex SL structure used by ISO 14001:2015 enables seamless integration with other global standards like ISO 9001, ISO 45001, or ISO 27001.

No, ISO 14001 isn’t mandatory. It’s a voluntary standard that provides a systematic approach to environmental management. However, many industries and clients require it, particularly for government tenders and supply chain qualification. An EMS built to ISO 14001 improves your operations, reduces waste, and builds trust with the people who matter to your business.

The ISO 14001 certification cost varies based on your organisation’s size, the number of sites in scope, and the complexity of your operations. Expenses include training, internal audits, and the recertification audit every three years. While the initial investment can seem significant, the efficiency gains and waste reduction typically deliver long-term value that more than offsets the cost.

ISO 14001 certification lasts for three years. Annual surveillance audits are required to maintain your certification during that period. After three years, a recertification audit renews your certificate. This three-year cycle and its international recognition applies only to certifications issued by IAF (International Accreditation Forum) recognised bodies, like Citation Group.
