Step 3: Implementation

The first step in implementing or transitioning an ISO management system in your organisation is comparing your current management systems with the ISO requirements.

Step 4: Stage 1 & 2 Assessments

The certification audit consists of two stages; stage one involves evaluating the documentation of your management system, while stage two checks if the standard requirements have been implemented.

After successfully achieving certification, you will receive a ‘Statement of Certification’ confirming compliance with the relevant standard. This remains valid for three years, with regular annual surveillance audits to maintain compliance.

The acronym ISO stands for International Organisation for Standardization – the peak body that develop and publish International Standards.

It covers everything from data governance and algorithm transparency to risk assessment and continuous improvement processes.

ISO/IEC 42001 aims to help organisations establish responsible AI governance, manage AI-related risks effectively, ensure compliance with relevant regulations, promote ethical AI development and use, and build stakeholder confidence in AI systems through transparent and accountable practices.

ISO 42001 is designed for any organisation that develops, uses, or is impacted by AI systems. This includes technology companies developing AI solutions, businesses implementing AI tools in their operations, government agencies using AI for public services, and organisations in regulated industries where AI governance is critical.

While ISO 27001 focuses on information security management systems, ISO 42001 specifically addresses artificial intelligence in management systems. ISO 42001 covers AI-specific risks like algorithmic bias, transparency requirements, and ethical considerations that aren’t fully addressed by traditional information security frameworks.

ISO 42001 certification costs vary based on organisation size, complexity of AI systems, and the intended coverage. Factors affecting cost include initial assessment, documentation development, staff training, certification audit fees, and ongoing surveillance audits.
